“The Vet Visit Vagabonds” (book 5) Excerpt

“…”Pit-Paht,” said Purrkins, lazily rolling on to his back in order to sun his very large stomach, “I do feel very much inclined to hahve some fun” – (which, in case you were wondering, is felinese for “I do feel very much inclined to get into mischief”) – “but there hahsn’t been any occasion to hahve fun!”

“W-w-well, P-Purrkinth,” Pit-Pat replied, “P-p-perhapth that’th j-jutht ath well. Y-you know how the M-M-Mithreth and ethpecially the M-Mathter get tho mad at uth when we have f-f-fun.”

The next day, Purrkins and Pit-Pat were patiently waiting in the kitchen until Mrs. Harrington finished the bacon for breakfast, when she (that is, Mrs. Harrington) said, “James, I scheduled the kitties’ vet appointment for 5:00 this evening. Do you think you can get home early enough to watch John and Alice? 5:00 was the latest appointment I could get.”

Purrkins and Pit-Pat perked up their ears at the sound of that dreaded three-letter word: V-E-T. Stealthily they crept out of the kitchen to have a private consultation as to what was to be done. “Oooh, Pit-Paht!” groaned Purrkins, “Whaht shall we do? The Mistress is going to take us to the vet! “

“I-I-I-I-I-I-I kn-n-n-know!” Pit-Pat stuttered, for the prospect of a visit to the veterinary clinic made him extremely nervous, hence the exaggerated stammering. “B-b-but I-I d-d-on’t know what w-w-we c-can d-do ab-b-bout it.”

“Well,” said Purrkins meditatively, “I suppose that for now we cahn just wait and when 4:45 comes, then we shall hide.”

“Th-that’th a g-g-good idea, P-P-Purrkinth.”

So they did. They tried to act quite normal, and succeeded so well that Mrs. Harrington said to Alice, “It looks like the kitties will be easy to catch today!”…”
