“The New Year Nuisances” (book 3) Excerpt
“… As youhave most likely already surmised, Purrkins was filled with the spirit of mischief on the discovery that not a soul was in the house.
“Pit-Paht,” he said to that very small creature, “I do think thaht it would be great fun to make a little pahty of our own while the Mahstah and Mistress are away. What do you say?”
(In case you were wondering what “pahty” means, it means “party”).
“Well, P-P-Purrkinth,” answered Pit-Pat nervously, “P-perhapth they might come b-back before we are f-f-finished with th-the party.”
“Nonsense!”returned Purrkins impatiently, “You really ah such a foolish little kitten!”
As you must remember, when the Harringtons went to visit Mrs. Harrington’s aunt’s second cousin’s niece twice removed, Purrkins had mercilessly called Pit-Pat a “kitten” (which, if you remember, is the feline equivalent of calling someone a “baby” for being shy or frightened), but Pit-Pat had, like the wise little cat that he was, let it pass without a word (except in his mind he was envisioning himself choking Purrkins to death). But to have Purrkins repeat the offense was not to be endured. With this thought came an inspiration to be bold, and he flashed this startling speech at Purrkins: “Purrkinth, I have put up with your dom-ee-noting thpirit long enough! It is time that I told you that I am not a kitten, I am a nearly full grown cat, and I think you ought to treat me with more rethpect! You only act like I’m a kitten becauthe you really are and want to make yourthelf look good by making me look like I am a worthleth, cowardly kitten!”
And with a flourish of his tail, he walked proudly away in high triumph. …”
