“The Dinner Party Disaster” (book 4) Excerpt

“… “A dinner party?” returned Mr. Harrington, “What for?”

“Why, just for fun!” Mrs. Harrington exclaimed. “Parties are fun things, and you don’t necessarily need a special occasion or reason to have one!”

“Indeed!” Purrkins, who was presumably snoozing on the sofa, murmured to himself. “Pahties ah most certainly fun things!”

Mr. Harrington agreed to Mrs. Harrington’s suggestion, the date of the party was set for April 10th (two weeks hence) and the invitations sent out to some of the most intimate friends of the Harringtons (no children allowed, of course – John and Alice were to be sent to their grandmother).

The next day, Purrkins and Pit-Pat had a meeting in the family room (you know, cats are often planning and conspiring together when we think they are just having a nice nap). “Pit-Paht,” said Purrkins, “Yestahday I heard the Mistress and the Mahstah say thaht they ah going to hahve a pahty. A dinnah pahty! Think whaht fun for us, Pit-Paht!”

“O-oh, y-y-yeth!” answered Pit-Pat (who, you remember of course, lisped and stuttered, except when he was inspired to be bold), “B-but what shall we d-do when they have the p-p-party?”

“Oh, Pit-Paht! We shall see, we shall see. Only do try not to be troublesome!”

At that Pit-Pat became slightly indignant. It was still better to be called troublesome than to be called a kitten, but nevertheless, unpleasant. “Well,” said Pit-Pat, becoming bolder by the minute, “You shouldn’t talk to me about being troublethome! You are the one who ith alwayth thinking up naughty thingth, and I have alwayth gone along with every plan you make! Well! Maybe now you will find out that I won’t alwayth go along! Tho there!”…”
