“The Chase of the Chipmunk” (book 6) Excerpt

“…In the meantime, Purrkins and Pit-Pat were occupied with their favorite pastime –lounging on the sofa. They heard Mrs. Harrington start to lead the children to the laundry room, when suddenly they heard a shriek, coming from both the female members of the family.

“Aaaahhhhh! A chipmunk in the house!” screamed Alice, running down the hall in the opposite direction of the little rodent. Mrs. Harrington, though she was grown, had an extreme aversion to anything that bore the slightest resemblance to a mouse, and a chipmunk was no exception. “P-P-Purrkinth,” said Pit-Pat (who, of course you know by now, lisped and stuttered), “Do you thee what I thee?” (That is translated, “Do you see what I see?” in case you were wondering).

“I think so, Pit-Paht. Whaht do you see?”

“I thee one of thothe little thtriped moutheth!”

(That means, “I see on of those little striped mouses,” which, if you think about it, was not even a correct statement, as “mice” is the plural of “mouse” – oh, never mind).

“Oh, Pit-Paht!” said Purrkins, on the verge of laughing out loud, “It’s a chipmunk, you little – “

But then he stopped, because he remembered what had happened the last time he called Pit-Pat a kitten….”
