The Purrkins and Pit-Pat stories all started out at a retirement home. Yes, you read that right. Kathryn and Emily, the author and illustrator (respectively) of the books went every week to a retirement home to visit with the elderly folks there.
Each week an elderly gentleman by the name of Gordon came to this gathering. He was very grumpy, and never said a word to anyone. He just sat in the same chair every week with his head in his hands. Everyone was a little bit afraid of him.
But one day, Kathryn’s mom suggested they try an experiment on Gordon, and run to give him a hug. So they did; and he was so pleased and surprised and was a changed man from then on.
He was very lonely, though, so Kathryn decided to write a letter to him; and he wrote back and it turned into a regular correspondence. In one letter, Gordon asked what Kathryn’s favorite subject in school was. She replied that creative writing was one of them. He in turn asked what that was, since he hadn’t heard the term before. As an answer, Kathryn wrote him a short story - the first book in the Purrkins & Pit-Pat series, “A Tale of Tails.”
He liked it so much that Kathryn continued to write stories about Purrkins & Pit-Pat, writing 7 stories in all. So far only the first is available for sale in book format; but we’re hoping to make the rest available in the future!
